ARTIST STATEMENT
Exploring the bewildering experience of displacement plays important role in Ates’s work. She questions cultural and social values through exploration of memory, loss and nostalgia. She engages in the potential of pattern and motifs within Islamic art. Layers held within lavish architectural spaces offering possibilities to hide or reveal, alluding to the theatrical. Her work begins with film and photography, yet a subsequent layering of imagery results in a disruptive blur of cultural perceptions. This compounds the idea of “the veil”, which sits at the core of her art practice. Manifestations of this have been realized through performance and site responsive activities that merge eastern and western sensibilities.
